“FALL: A Season of Floral Transition”

“FALL: A Season of Floral Transition”

Transition defined:the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another; a passage from one subject, or place to another.

As it relates to language, a transition is a word(s) used to link words, phrases, or sentences. They help to progress from on idea to the next.As such, they help to build up coherent relationships within the communication of ideas.Words like again, to, also, and then are just a few examples of how we bridge one thought to the next.Phrases such as “in the first place,” “as a matter of fact,” and “in the light of” are some examples of how we cross the chasm of ideas in language.

Nature also clearly reflects the essence of transition in various ways. The latest volcanic activity on Hawaii’s mainland makes clear the destructive and complex nature of some transitions, which completely alter the landscape of what was once a thriving and growing community. The once rich and fertile land is now covered with layers of magma and rock, which will take a long period of time to once again burst into a living and growing ecosystem capable of supporting and nurturing life.Such a transition is hard to witness, even though we know such is the possible behavior of our natural environment. It is in a constant state of change.

But not all transitions are violent or as dramatic. Most are subtle, and quietly make their way into our lives in an almost unexpected or unnoticeable fashion. The seasons are a good example of such subtly. As we move from one quarter to the next, we begin to notice small changes taking place around us.Such things as temperature, wind, daylight, leaves, flowers, and precipitation all cause us to take notice.

So it is with the Season of Fall. This transition is announced by the gradual change in the color of our trees and the gentle dropping of brightly colored leaves. The seeding of the grass as it makes preparation for hibernation and a lengthy winter’s rest. The temperature begins to dip and the evenings and mornings meet us with a crisp feel in the air.As we progress deeper into the season, we are eventually met one morning with the sight of frost, which invokes its color changing magic on every tree that still bears its’ leaves.Through such small transitions, we say goodbye to the warm summer months, and make preparation for the cooler days of fall and the eventual arrival of even colder winter days.

At Angle Florist in Christiansburg, VA we are also making preparations for the fall transition with the arrival of fall cut flowers. Our coolers are slowly becoming stocked with oranges, golds, browns, burgundies, and bronze.Cushion mums, daily pom-pons, carnations, sunflowers, various fall foliage, and matching containers all announce the arrival of the fall season and the warmth and brilliance it ushers in.
