Red, White, and Blue Blossoms Symbolize Liberty!

Red, White, and Blue Blossoms Symbolize Liberty!

The Fourth of July is almost upon us and people across the nation will once again be celebrating their independence from British rule.

It may come as a shock to some, but Independence Day was almost the second of July, as opposed to the fourth.  The formal call for freedom actually occurred on July 2nd, while Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.  The Declaration did not become official though until August 2, 1776 after members of Congress signed the document, (according to the National Archives).

President John Adams wrote in a letter to his wife that July 2nd should be celebrated by future generations as the “great anniversary festival” for the new nation.  He almost got his wish!  Perhaps that is why so many begin to celebrate the festivities as early as the last week of June, as fireworks in our neighborhood have actually been firing since the second week of June.

“Let freedom ring” is a declaration by many throughout our country.  Interestingly, is the fact that the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia hasn’t been rung for the past 171 years!  Its last sound was heard on February 23, 1846 in order to celebrate the birthday of George Washington.  Its silence was deemed necessary because of fears that is would worsen the crack.  Instead of the bell ringing, we hear bands playing and fireworks exploding to signal the birth of our nation’s independence.

Those of us at Angle Florist in Christiansburg, Virginia wish you the very best this holiday season.  We hope you will enjoy your time with family and loved ones as you recall the blessings that come from living in a free and democratic society.  We hope that as you fire up the grill and slice the watermelon, you will pause for a moment to consider the many privileges we enjoy to live in a society that celebrates freedoms of speech, press, religion, and travel to name just a few.
